Institute presentation
The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at RWTH Aachen University Hospital, headed by Prof. Herpertz-Dahlmann, comprises two day patient clinics, an outpatient clinic, as well as three inpatient wards for children and adolescents. The Child Neuropsychology Section, headed by Prof. Konrad, is closely affiliated. The department serves a catchment area of about 900.000 inhabitants, including German speaking communities in Belgium. There has been a long lasting, strong cooperation with child welfare institutions in the local region. The department serves approximately 670 new children and adolescents with different subtypes of conduct disorder (CD) each year. A large database with more than 1200 youth with CD or related symptoms is available, including clinical, neuropsychological, endocrinological as well as neuroimaging data. The department has been involved in several multi-site national and international neuropsychological, genetic, neuroimaging and intervention trials on child and adolescent neuropsychiatric disorders, funded by the EU, the German Research Council (DFG), the Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF), and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). One main research focus of the department has been on the neurophysiological, neurochemical and neurostructural underpinnings of antisocial behaviors in boys with CD compared to ADHD and neurotypical controls. Currently, the department investigates the intergenerational transmission of abuse in adolescent motherhood, including many young mothers with CD. This FemNAT-CD partner is responsible for WP 3 (Prof. Herpertz-Dahlmann, Prof. Konrad), will participate in WP 1, WP2, WP 4, WP 6, WP7, and WP 8, and is task leader of the tryptophan challenge study in WP 8 (Prof. Zepf).
